Emilie Ruecker Wildlife Refuge
Seapowet Ave, Tiverton
The Ruecker Wildlife Refuge is a 50-acre preserve featuring easy trails, beautiful views of the Sakonnet River, salt marshes, woods, a pond, and many birds, including egrets, great blue herons and glossy ibis. There are also observation blinds that kids will enjoy hiding behind – if only for a short while!
You can easily cover all of the trails at Ruecker Wildlife Refuge – all of them level, easy to walk, and well-marked – so you can let even the youngest hiker follow their nose. Just bring the map below!
Length: total trail mileage = 1.5 miles
Difficulty: easy for children
Dogs: to protect the fragile ecology of the refuge, please leave your dogs at home
You might want to bring: binoculars; bird field guide; bug spray and long pants (to protect against poison ivy)
Get directions or follow ours:
From Providence: Take Route 195 east to Route 24 south. Take Route 24 south to the Route 77 south exit. Follow Route 77 for 2.7 miles and turn right onto Seapowet Ave. The refuge will be on your right.
From Newport: Travel east on Route 114/West Main Road. Merge onto Route 24 north toward Route 195 (Fall River/Providence). Stay on 24 north for 4 miles and take exit 4 toward Tiverton/Little Compton just after crossing the bridge. Travel on Route 77 south for 3.6 miles and turn right onto Seapowet Ave. The refuge will be on your right.
