Tuckertown Road, South Kingstown
Join us as we explore the Chestnut Orchards, a property managed by the South Kingstown Land Trust and not usually open to the public. This is a free Family Nature Play Date (FNPD). We’ll start off with some fun activities, including a treasure hunt for kids! Adults can learn about the wonderful chestnut project intended to produce a newly hybridized chestnut tree immune to the chestnut blight that felled them a century ago.
And you can earn 5,000 points through the Zoo’s Nature Swap. Participants in the program bring in natural “found” items to collect points for swapping with items in their collection. See below for more information.
The Chestnut Orchard is located on Tuckertown Road in South Kingstown. From the intersection with Post Road/Main Street (at Stewart Nursery), travel about 0.5 mile. The entrance is on the right hand (north) side of the road. Look for a sign and/or balloons.
To earn 5,000 Nature Swap Quest Points you must:
- Attend the FNPDs in Lincoln Woods on Sunday, May 15, at 3:00pm.
- Bring some sort of photographic/journal book evidence that you attended the FNPD to the Nature Swap in the RWPZoo’s Big Backyard children’s space. (Nature Swap hours are Friday–Monday, 10:00am–2:00pm daily).
Nature Play Grant
For the second year in a row, the Roger Williams Park Zoo was one of the recipients of aNature Play grant, which was developed by the Children & Nature Network (C&NN) and the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) through a special gift from the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. This grant allows us to offer free nature based play experiences in various parks, playgrounds, preserves, and other properties that are off zoo grounds–but easy to get to! Each FNPD includes a series of structured and unstructured activities focused on a particular wildlife theme and you’ll have tons of family fun–outside–for an hour or so. Each FNPD is also a Nature Swap “Quest” and allows participants to earn 5,000 bonus points in their accounts. Learn more about the Zoo’s Nature Swap here.
