Boston Neck Road (Route 1A), North Kingstown

Known to many simply as Rome Point, the Chafee Nature Preserve is one of the few natural spaces in RI that may be more popular in the colder months than any other season. Harbor seals migrate into this area in October and stay through the winter and spring.

This hike is 2.5 miles long and may be challenging to young children – but the potential to see Harbor Seals will definitely motivate them!

  • Please give yourself plenty of time to find parking and ready yourself for our hike. Usually I am not so strict about the time we start. However, the best time to view the seals is during low tide so we’ll want to start hiking and get to Rome Point as quickly as possible.
  • This hike can easily take 2-3 hours. Plan to stay awhile as Rome Point, where we’ll watch the seals, is a great place to explore and play.
  • Please dress appropriately! It can be quite windy at Rome Point, so bring layers and a hat and gloves.
  • Bring plenty of snacks and water, as well as a picnic lunch!
  • If you have binoculars or a spotting scope, be sure to bring them along.
  • You can earn 5,000 points through the Zoo’s Nature Swap. Participants in the program bring in natural “found” items to collect points for swapping with items in their collection. Find out more information here.

  1. Did you see seals on the 25 th?? I want on the 24th but it was very cloudy…waited more than an hour and nothing 🙁

    1. So sorry you didn’t see any seals! The best opportunity to see them is at low tide, and it helps if it is a clear day with no or little wind. Also, many people try to see them from the shoreline, but not all the way at Rome Point (which is best reached following the path that goes left from the main trail just after the power lines).
