12 Sanderson Road (Rt. 5), Smithfield, 401-949-5454
The Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge is home to the Audubon Society of RI’s headquarters where you’ll find a library, gift shop, teacher’s resource center, and bird feeding station. On the trails, you’ll find many different animals including white tail deer, coyote, grey fox, and wild turkey, as well as a pond, a brook, rock walls, and beautiful trees.
For a very short walk which includes the pond, follow the orange trail just beyond the kiosk that sits next to the headquarters. To extend your hike, follow the blue trail which eventually connects back to the orange trail.
Length: 0.85 miles orange trail only; about 2 miles if you extend on the blue trail
Difficulty: easy (orange) or moderate (+blue) for children
Dogs: to protect the fragile ecology of the refuge, please leave your dogs at home
You might want to bring: a little cash for the gift shop
Get directions or follow ours: From Route 295, take exit 7B onto Route 44 West. At the fourth set of lights, turn left onto Route 5 (Sanderson Road). The refuge is on your left.
