Neutaconkanut Hill

With 88 acres and rising to almost 300 feet above sea level, Neutaconkanut (nu-ta-kon-ka-nut) Hill is the largest expanse of natural woodland in Providence and contains the city’s highest point. That’s right: Several miles of well-maintained trails through beautiful forests and fields, with spectacular views of the city and a significant portion of the state, right smack in the middle of the most densely populated area of Providence. With steep ascents and descents over rugged terrain, it won’t take long to forget you’re in our largest city! This area was the northwest boundary in the land agreement between Roger Williams and the Narragansett Sachems and, in my opinion, is the best-kept secret of Providence. The Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy hosts various family events throughout the year, and there is a skate park, playground, and fields to enjoy—all accessible via the RIPTA bus line!
Length: 1.5 miles; 2.0 miles if you extend on the blue trail
Difficulty: moderate to challenging for children
Dogs: are welcome, so long as they are leashed and you clean up after them
