From the Kettle Pond Visitor Center, the trails in the northern section of the Ninigret NWR are flat and easy to navigate through beautiful pine and oak trees, blueberry shrubs and ferns. The Watchaug Pond Trail leads to the Toupoysett Pond Trail loop, where you’ll be able to explore a peaceful vernal pool full of critters. If you want a longer hike, continue the Ocean View Trail to a view of Ninigret Pond and Block Island.
After your hike, be sure to explore the interactive exhibits, displays, and activities at the Kettle Pond Visitor Center. It’s open daily from 10-4 and free!

Difficulty: very easy for children
Dogs: pets are not allowed on national wildlife refuges, except at Kettle Pond Visitor Center – please keep your dogs leashed at all times and clean up after them
You might want to bring: magnifying glasses and boots for exploring the pond’s edge
Get directions or follow ours: Park at the Kettle Pond Visitor Center, located on the north side of Route 1 in Charlestown. When traveling on Route 1 South, pass the Ninigret NWR entrance and travel 0.5 miles. Turn right onto Bend Road. When traveling on Route 1 North, travel just past the sign for Burlingame. Make a u-turn onto Route 1 South. Travel 0.5 miles. Take a right on Bend Road.
